Age verification policy
Why the 18+ gate exists on nectar-ai.io, exactly what it stores, how to reset it, and how parental controls can lock the site out at a device or network level.
Why the gate exists
Nectar AI is an adult AI companion platform. The homepage at nectar.ai openly markets adult roleplay as a selling point, and reviews on this site cover the platform's content policy, its adult-tier features and its filter behaviour in editorial detail. The main artifact that coverage lives inside is the Nectar AI pricing and alternatives page. That coverage is written for adult readers. The age gate is the mechanism this site uses to make sure a reader has actively confirmed they are 18 or older before that coverage displays.
What the gate stores
When you click "I am 18 or older, Enter", the site writes a single localStorage entry to your browser named nai_age_ok with the value 1. That entry stores exactly two facts: that a click happened, and that it was a positive click. Nothing else is stored. No name, no age, no country, no fingerprint; broader data-handling rules for the site sit on the privacy policy. The entry is stored on your device only; it is never sent to the server and never leaves your browser. Broader positioning of the site sits on the about page.
How to reset the gate
The gate resets in three ways. First, clearing site data for nectar-ai.io in your browser settings removes the entry and the gate appears again on your next visit. Second, using a private-browsing or incognito window means the entry never persists in the first place; every fresh incognito session shows the gate. Third, switching browsers or devices resets the gate on the new browser or device, because localStorage is per-browser and per-device. Details on how facts on this site are verified sit on the methodology page.
How to leave
The gate has a "I am under 18, Leave" button. Clicking it navigates the browser away from nectar-ai.io to google.com. Pressing the Escape key on your keyboard while the gate is open does the same thing. Neither of those actions is logged; both are handled entirely in the browser.
Legal framing
The gate is a good-faith effort to confirm adult status, not a legally enforceable age verification system. Reliable age verification requires document upload or a third-party identity check, neither of which this site collects, and both of which would create larger privacy problems than they would solve for an editorial site with no account system. The 18+ gate is standard practice for adult-content-adjacent editorial sites and is the most reader-friendly balance of intent, privacy and low friction. Full editorial handling of adult-adjacent content is described on the editorial policy page.
Parental controls that lock the site out
If you are a parent looking to keep a minor from reaching this site, device and network-level controls are more reliable than any age gate. Apple's Screen Time (iOS, macOS) supports web-content restrictions that can block adult categories or add nectar-ai.io to a per-site blocklist. Google Family Link (Android, Chromebook) does the same at the account level. Router-level DNS filters (OpenDNS FamilyShield, NextDNS with the Adult category enabled, Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for Families) work across every device on the network, including guests. Any of those approaches works better than a click-through gate.
RTA labelling
The site carries the RTA (Restricted To Adults) meta tag in the HTML head, which lets adult-content filters like NetNanny, K9 and DansGuardian pick the site out automatically and block it before the age gate ever appears. RTA is the standard adult-content label and is respected by most parental-control systems. Filters that do not respect RTA can still block the site through the domain blocklists described above.
What happens if a minor bypasses the gate
Clicking the "I am 18 or older" button when you are not is a violation of the terms of service of this site. The site cannot detect this on its own, which is why the parental controls above exist; if a parent or guardian discovers that a minor has been reading the site, contacting the editor is the fastest path to whatever help this site can provide. The right structural answer is parent-side, not site-side. The site's hosting position on adult depictions sits in the 18 U.S.C. § 2257 statement.
